Australian Jennifer Kent has made one of the most ambitious and chilling films to have been offered up in recent years. The despair and growing anger that consume Amelia (Essie Davis), a widow with a six-year-old son, prompt a film that is as terrifying as it is beautiful about real and metaphorical monsters. Kent masterfully handles the codes of fantastic and horror film to lucidly and bravely address themes such as guilt, depression and madness.
