Pioneers of what is known as the expanded lecture, composer and experimental musician Anthony Moore and media archaeologist Siegfried Zielinski offer an alternative view of European philosophy i which thought takes the forms of sound, rhythm, melody, and image.
For two and a half millennia, philosophical and scientific thought in Europe was only attributed to those who were able to express themselves through written or spoken language. However, sound, rhythm, melody, and visuals have also helped us articulate thoughts and ideas. Walter Benjamin’s dialectic images and Serguei Eisenstein’s montage hit at the heart of contemporary productions. This conference-performance by British composer and experimental musician Anthony Moore and media archaeologist Siegfried Zielinski explores new formats for offering philosophy lectures based on the potential space created by public presentations.
The event takes place in the framework of Performing the Lecture, a cycle of experimental dialogues and performances exploring the creative possibilities of the lecture form. The cycle is directed by Elizabeth Sarah Coles, Amador Vega and Sergi Castellà (Universitat Pompeu Fabra), and is financed by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation program under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie grant agreement no. 887344.
