Miquel Barceló and Sergio Vila-Sanjuán

Debate + Access

The renowned artist Miquel Barceló speaks with the journalist and curator Sergio Vila-Sanjuán about his life and career on the occasion of the publication of his book De la meva vida (On My Life, Galaxia Gutenberg, 2024).

The work of Miquel Barceló, one of Catalonia’s most widely known artists, is nurtured by more than six decades of discoveries, journeys and visions: the stones and dunes of Gao (Mali), the sea of his Mallorca childhood, the whirlwind of Paris and trips with Mariscal, the Chauvet cave, the painting of Picasso, Pollock, and Meléndez, and the literature of Proust and Nerval, among many other experiences. In the book De la meva vida all these images and memories are interwoven with Barceló’s first-person reflections, thus creating a unique self-portrait that opens a peephole to the inner world of his work. In this session, Barceló speaks with the journalist Sergio Vila-Sanjuán who, forty years ago, published the first book about Barceló, his life and career.

In the exhibition at the CCCB,«Agnès Varda. Fotografiar, filmar, reciclar» (Agnès Varda: Photographing, Filming, Recycling – until 8 December), Miquel Barceló’s portrait of Varda is exhibited, together with fragments of films that testify to their friendship and mutual admiration.
