Beyond the nuclear family

Debate

The gender theorist M. E. O’Brien, author of Family Abolition (Pluto Press, 2023), speaks with the anthropologist and journalist Christo Casas about the need to try new ways of communizing care.

In a situation of increasing social atomism, the family has become the basic source of sustenance for maintaining life, the space that guarantees everything from the most essential needs through to unconditional love.

But what about people who do not have the benefit of stable family ties? If human life is crisscrossed by interdependence, how can the domain of care-sharing be extended beyond the bounds of the nuclear family? How can universal access to basic care for maintaining life be guaranteed?

This lecture is programmed as part of the course Getting Familiar with the Abyss: The Grammars of Family Abolition, organized by the Barcelona Institute of Humanities, and directed by Christo Casas.

Presenters: Christo Casas

Participants: M. E. O'Brien
