Maria Stepanova

In memory of memory

Debate

The poet and essayist Maria Stepanova, one of the great figures of contemporary Russian literature, talks with the translator and curator of Other Voices, Other Russias, Jorge Ferrer about her work, a reflection on history and the mechanisms of memory.

This session proposes a reflection on memory, its uses and abuses, on the responsibility involved in remembering and forgetting, and the work that both exercises require of us as individuals and as societies. Maria Stepanova builds a monument to memory in her most renowned book: In memory of memory (published in Spanish by Acantilado, 2022), translated by Jorge Ferrer, in which Stepanova proposes a journey into the memory of her family, a trajectory that is also an X-ray of a century of Russian history.
