La Mula
Manual per éssers vius
Scene
This company, used to working with everyday objects, has found the most everyday of all: words and language, which have the potential to redefine our perceptions and transform the way we see the world.
Manual per a éssers vius, introduces innovative visual theatre language focusing on the written word. These words that determine how we see the world, then, are the protagonists. Because writing and reading, as human techniques, encompass a series of codes of perception that are embedded in daily life. The performers’ way of playing with these codes while using colour and light as core aesthetic elements set the comic tone of the show.
Perception, the alteration thereof, and playfulness. These are the cornerstones of the work produced by Magda Puig Torres and Andreu Martínez Costa’s La Mula company. In 2024, their Thauma, on the theme of wonder, earned applause from many viewers and critics. Now they are back with a show designed as the second instalment of a diptych on the theme of “astonishment”, a concept, half-surprise, half-wonder, that the ancient Greeks described as the driver of knowledge.
La Mula is a theatre company that works with the visual arts, puppets and space. Understanding the stage as a space for expression, their works are shaped by a fluid approach to theatre under the direction of Magda Puig Torres and Andreu Martínez Costa. Puig Torres, a creator interested in the intersection between visual and performing arts, was a resident artist at the Teatre Lliure for the 23/24 season, and in 2023 co-directed Glatir, the Ateneu Popular 9 Barris’s 28th Winter Circus, with Oriol Escursell. Martínez Costa, an actor, puppeteer, stage director and researcher who divides his time between Catalonia, France and Canada, has worked with companies such as Philippe Genty and El Conde de Torrefiel and is currently an associate artist at Plexus Polaire, a French-Norwegian company.
