Jean-Yves Jouannais and Antonio Monegal

Metaphors of war

Debate

Regarding the publication of Las barreras de arena (Acantilado, 2025), Jean-Yves Jouannais, essayist and art critic, reflects with professor and writer Antonio Monegal on the forms taken by the representations of war in our society.

War conflicts shape artistic production and thought, and at the same time, the artworks offer a unique vision of the imaginary we construct about war and violence. In his latest publication, Jouannais proposes to think of sand castles as ephemeral constructions that symbolize resistance in the face of destruction and the inevitability of catastrophe, thus evidencing human fragility through images and rethinking the role of art in the construction of history, thought and collective memory.

The author will discuss these issues with professor and writer Antonio Monegal, who, in his latest publication, El silencio de la guerra (Acantilado, 2024), also wonders how to think and speak about war through its multiple representations.
