On September 1, 1939, with the attack of Nazi Germany on Poland, World War II began. Two days later, Great Britain and France declared war on the 3rd Reich. The year 1939, which had already seen the Spanish Civil War end with the fascist victory, was now embarking on another road to violence and catastrophe, in which the confrontation between fascism and antifascism reached its most critical levels. Seventy years later, we have the opportunity to reflect on what 1939 meant for Europe, for Spain and for Catalonia, and how his year configured world history in the second half of the 20th Century.

The symposium Europe, 1939. The Year of Catastrophes will be a discussion forum open to all social and human science researchers who are interested in reflecting on historical events with a definitive place European historical memory.
