Canadian photographer Edward Burtynsky photographs industrial landscapes the world over, in large format. While his work shows how humankind exploits natural resources, his photos also evoke his admiration of the monumental beauty he portrays in mines, factories, shipyards and other constructions. Jennifer Baichwal and her cameraman, Peter Mettler, travel with Burtynsky to China and Bangladesh, where they film the consequences of vast progress in modernization and industrialization. Alongside the grandiosity of these landscapes, the director presents a human context by way of interviews with the local people in a film that fascinates and invites reflection on overconsumption in equal measure.
