Edurne Portela, Janne Teller, and Karolina Ramqvist in conversation with Najat el Hachmi

Europe: Women Speak

Debate

In this conversation, the writers Edurne Portela, Karolina Ramqvist, and Janne Teller will share their views on the future of Europe with their fellow writer Najat el Hachmi on the occasion of the publication of Europa 28. Mujeres escriben sobre el futuro de Europa (Europe 28: Women Write about the Future of Europe, Galaxia Gutenberg, 2020).

In the midst of great global uncertainty, when some of the big challenges of our time have become more pressing than ever, the future of Europe, caught in a morass of unprecedented cultural and political divisions, looks unclear. It seems that we must urgently find new ways of analysing the European project from standpoints that leave aside economic factors and market calculations and focus on the continent’s more human dimension. But are we ready to take on the cultural and structural changes that will enable us to inhabit this planet in a different way? Promoted by the Hay Festival, the project Europa 28. Mujeres escriben sobre el futuro de Europa (Galaxia Gutenberg) brings together, from around the continent, 28 writers, thinkers and creators who will speak of the future of Europe in honest, daring words, revealing its fragilities, looking at areas where there is no media focus and, finally, wondering how their voices, women’s voices, might contribute towards changing the continent’s future.

In this session, the writers Edurne Portela, whose work speaks of violence, memory, and uprooting, Karolina Ramqvist, eminent among Swedish feminists and deemed to be one of the most influential writers of her generation, and Janne Teller, whose long career is dotted with controversy and heated debates, will speak with the writer Najat El Hachmi about how we might rethink Europe today, and how the perspective of women could change its narrative.

Edurne Portela, Janne Teller and Najat El Hachmi will be on stage, while Karolina Ramqvist will participate live by videoconference.

This event is organised with support from the Hay festival, Segovia.
