Indigenous Art and Women in the Visual Arts: Visions of an Ancestral Present-Future

Debate

The Yepa-mahsã visual artist and activist Daiara Tukano and the anthropologist from the Universidade Federal do Paraná Laura Pérez Gil converse about ancestral art and knowledge in the framework of the programme Interknowledge. Dialogues with Indigenous Peoples.

This conversation with Daiara Tukano sets out to guide reflection on the basis of her experiences as a female artist-activist, presenting some of her most representative works and her curatorial activity. It establishes a dialogue about the connections between the visual arts and the ancestral knowledge of native peoples, and the relationship between the practice of art and activism in defence of the fundamental rights of indigenous peoples. The session will also include discussion on the ideas and proposals related to possible presents-futures in a world on the brink of collapse.

Interknowledge. Dialogues with Indigenous Peoples sets out to promote, in dialogue form, the exchange of knowledge between artists, academics, activists and other indigenous specialists, with various audiences and experts, in Europe. The aim is to create a space for listening and debate to address current issues, focusing on indigenous experiences and initiatives.

In collaboration with the Indigenous and Afro-American Cultures Research Group (CINAF) of the Universitat de Barcelona and alterNativa-Intercanvi amb Pobles Indígenes. With the support of the Agència Catalana de Cooperació al Desenvolupament.
