Opening up the future
Conversation with Mariana Enriquez and Olga Merino
Living in a Time of Loss
Debate
In this session, on the occasion of the publication of her latest book, Alguien camina sobre tu tumba (Someone’s Walking on Your Grave, Anagrama), the writer Mariana Enriquez will speak with the also writer Olga Merino about the role played by death in our imaginary and the possibility of transforming it.
For many people, this last year has been marked by the pain of losing a loved one and the difficulty of sharing this blow in a time of social distancing. Death has often been relegated to silence but, after a year of the pandemic, it has inevitably become visible. Despite its presence in every corner of the world, the taboo of death and everything surrounding it continues to obstruct the possibility of talking about the role it plays in society. In her latest book, Alguien camina sobre tu tumba, Mariana Enriquez offers a chronicle of her visits to cemeteries around the world, in which she weaves a narrative where death rites dance with culture and stories clouded by the darkness that rules in their imaginary.
How do we relate with a ritual that is so common and yet so invisible? To what extent can transforming the role that death plays in our societies also transform the ways we deal with pain and loss?
Mariana Enriquez will participate in the conversation by videoconference.
Participants: Mariana Enriquez, Olga Merino
