Muna’s life is marked by the daily grind of West Bank checkpoints and the shadow of a failed marriage, but all that changes when she is granted a US work and residence permit. In search of a better future, Muna and her adolescent son, Fadi, leave Palestinein search of a new life in small-town Illinois. Muna’s sister, and her husband and their three daughters, take in the new arrivals. There they face the task of fitting into a different culture without relinquishing their own identity, dealing with an environment which, since the invasion of Iraq, regards the entire Middle East with suspicion. Despite everything, Muna strikes out optimistically, teaching her son a lesson he will never forget.
