José Eduardo Agualusa

War and Peace in Angola

The writer and journalist José Eduardo Agualusa attempts to show that over and above ideological differences the war in Angola was fuelled by an ancient conflict between the rural world and the urban one.

For the author of Estação das Chuvas the peace arrived at signified the capitulation of rural cultures to the values of a Portuguese-speaking Euro-African Creole culture represented by the old cities of the Angolan coastline. Agualusa expounds his view of the means necessary to attain a real peace, a civic peace, without winners or losers.
