Marie-Laure Ryan

She is a graduate in Computer Science from the University of California and a doctor of Literature from the University of Utah, where she also gained her master's degree in Linguistics.

She has worked as a software consultant and engineer, and is the author of around a hundred articles, translated into several languages, and dedicated, especially, to the concept of digital narrative. Highlights among her books are Possible Worlds. Artificial Intelligence and Narrative Theory (1991) and Narrative as Virtual Reality: Immersion and Interactivity in Literature and Electronic Media (2001). Furthermore, she is co-editor of The Routledge Encyclopedia of Narrative Theory (2005).

At present she is preparing new articles and has just published Avatars of Story: Narrative Modes in Old and New Media (2006).
