Nacido en Inglaterra, de padres sudafricanos, se licenció en la Columbia University. También estudió Filología francesa en la Universidad de Tours y es contrabajista clásico y de jazz. Después de trabajar en Harper & Row (1982) y en W.W. Norton (1983/4), fundó Four Walls Eight Windows y en 1995 Seven Stories Press, editorial que ha publicado títulos como Grand Central Winter, de Lee Stringer; Parable of the Talents (1998), de Octavia E. Butler; Poems Seven, de Alan Dugan, ganador del National Book Award; 9-11 (2001), de Noam Chomsky; y A Man without a Country (2005), de Kurt Vonnegut. Asimismo, Seven Stories ha abogado por libros censurados, como Dark Alliance: The CIA, the Contras, and the Crack Cocaine Conspiracy, de Gary Webb; All Things Censored, de Mumia Abu-Jamal; y My Times: A Memoir of Dissent, de John Hess.
Entre sus libros, destacan la biografía Run Run Run: The Lives of Abbie Hoffman (1994) y, como traductor, Van Gogh: Self-Portraits by Pascal Bonafoux (1989). Sus artículos se han publicado en The Nation, The Progressive y The Monthly Review, y ha colaborado en History of the Book in America (cuatro volúmenes) y en el Oxford Companion to the Book. En 1996, fue nombrado Caballero de las Artes y las Letras por el Ministerio de Cultura francés.
