Writer, director, artist and singer. One of the most prestigious and creative American artists at work today, she is famous for her multimedia creations and innovative uses of technology. Her art continuously transcends the frontiers of art, theatre and experimental music.

Her many recordings, which began with O Superman in 1981, also include the soundtracks to her films Home of the Brave (1986) and Life on a String (2001). Her performances range from spoken word to elaborate multimedia spectacles, like Songs and Stories for Moby Dick (1999). She has published seven books and her art has been presented in some of the world's most important museums.

In 2002, she was named as the first artist-in-residence at NASA, a period which she concluded with her solo tour The End of the Moon.  Her most recent projects include a series of audiovisual installations and a high-definition film called Hidden Inside Mountains, created for the 2005 Expo in Aichi, Japan. In 2007, she received the prestigious Dorothy and Lillian Gish Prize for her outstanding contribution to the arts. She is currently at work on her new album: Homeland.
