Writer. After studying in South Africa, where he graduated in Mathematics and English, he did a postgraduate degree in literature in the USA. He has taught at different universities around the world, including Cape Town, Chicago and, currently, in Adelaide.

He is the author of eleven works of fiction, among them, The master of Petersburg (1994), Elizabeth Costello (2003) and the recent Diary of a bad year (2007). He has also published memoirs, criticism and translations. His works are characterized by their critique of apartheid and racism in general, exploring their negative consequences on society. He has won the Booker Prize twice for Life & Times of Michael K (1983) and Disgrace (1999). In 1993 he received the Nobel Prize for literature for “showing an outstanding commitment from the perspective of an outsider”.

Since 2002, he has lived in Australia working as a professor of humanities at the University of Adelaide.
