Local Racism, Global Apartheid

South Africa as a paradigm

Coinciding with the exhibition “Apartheid: the South African Mirror”, the CCCB is organizing a symposium that will address new forms of discrimination and segregation that are fuelling old mechanisms of inequality and exclusion and creating new ones, both in the most developed regions and particularly in the relations between the richest and the poorest countries.

 

The symposium will focus on new forms of discrimination and segregation generated by traditional racism that revive old mechanisms of inequality and exclusion, and create new ones, both in the more developed regions of the north-western world and, particularly, in relations between the richest countries and most of the world.

Addressing the phenomenon of racism and particularly apartheid in South Africa therefore means immersing ourselves not only in the past of another culture but also taking a look at the dark side of forms of reasoning-and practices-that have marked our own history and, to a large extent, still exist today.
