The Transmedia Imagination

Transmedia narrative thrives in a networked culture. Stories are now told across multiple media platforms, relying on readers to connect the dots. Popular fiction is increasingly organized around immersive story worlds. And interesting content is spread through online communities. Is this what the future of storytelling looks like? For some, this world will feel alien. Yet, in fact, many of these properties have a much older history in early novels, melodrama, movie serials, and children's literature, which we can rely upon to navigate this bold new world. In this lecture, Prof. Jenkins, who coined the term "Transmedia Storytelling" will explain what it means and place it in a larger historical context for thinking about the nature of storytelling.
