Charles Burnett

Variations on the Real

When he was a student at UCLA, the Afro-American filmmaker, Charles Burnett, shot a legendary film, Killer of Sheep, working on weekends over the course of a year with non-professional actors. This work, despite the awards it won at the Berlin and Sundance festivals, remains marginal and practically underground. It tells the story of a black man who works at a slaughterhouse, portraying everyday life in the Los Angeles ghetto of Watts.
