Carles Viarnès

Composer and pianist

(Igualada, 1975) Carles Viarnès studied at the Escolania boys’ choir school at Montserrat and the Barcelona Conservatory of Music. He earned qualifications in Piano, Fagot, Theory of Music, Harmony, Counterpoint, Composition, Analysis and Orchestration.

Spanning minimalism and contemporary music, following in the footsteps of composers like Górecki and Arvo Pärt, Igualada-born pianist and composer Carles Viarnès combines a solid classical training with touches of electronic music and experimentation. With references like Nils Frahm, Max Richter and Hauschka, his music paints hypnotic, cinematic landscapes, apparently static but in constant motion.

Although he has been present on the Catalan music scene for some time, his career has taken off in recent years with performances at festivals such as Sónar, Eufònic, Embassa’t and Primavera Sound, and in venues like the Palau de la Música Catalana and the Teatros del Canal in Madrid.
