The Voynich Manuscript
A Centuries-Old Enigma
Debate
The writer and journalist Elisa McCausland speaks with the writers Diego Salgado and Francisco Jota-Pérez about the mysterious fifteenth-century Voynich manuscript, a work that fascinates academics and researchers but that no codebreaker has yet managed to decipher.
The Voynich manuscript has been a mystery since it first appeared in the early fifteenth century. A mixture of naturalist treatise, hermetic text, and cryptic repertoire of signs, no one has yet been able to ascertain the author, contents, or aims of the work. In the words of the researcher Marcelo Dos Santos, “None of the scientific procedures used to reveal the secrets of known languages and systems of writing have been able to drag the Voynich manuscript out of centuries of silence. This is the most remarkable literary enigma of all time”.
In this session moderated by Elisa McCausland, Juan José Garcia, Director of Editorial Siloé, the writers Francisco Jota-Pérez and Diego Salgado will consider the Voynich manuscript from different perspectives and will speak about its subversive influence in academia, its imaginative potential, its condition as a heterodox reflection of an epoch, and also its bibliographical value.
Moderators: Elisa McCausland
Participants: Francisco Jota-Pérez, Diego Salgado, Juan José García
