FLASHBACK ELECTION

Sweden, 20', entertainment, SVT

Presented by: Desireé Leon (UAB student)

Ahead of Sweden's 2022 elections, candidates were interviewed in a completely different way than usual. All the political leaders were questioned and confronted with the most absurd anonymous posts from internet forums (Reddit, Flashback). Eight politicians had to answer and comment on questions that no-one could've ever prepared them for. They had to deal with the absurdities, cruel accusations, nonsense and misconceptions found on the internet. The aim of the programme was to unmask politicians and find a fresher, more authentic side to the person behind the mask. 'Does the Prime Minister have the big-cock energy that Sweden really needs?' 'Is the left-wing party only for gays and people with allergies?' 'Does the Minister for Social Affairs love drinking?' The podcast's hosts, Emma, Ina and Mia, bombarded the leaders of each party for an hour, amid both laughter and awkward silences. It was the most watched programme by 16–29-year-olds. In this episode, the interviewee is Ulf Kristersson, then leader of the opposition and later Prime Minister.

WELMOED AND THE SEXFAKES

Netherlands, 23', investigative series, NPO

Presented by: Welmoed Sijtsma (presenter) and Marieke Smits (investigator) (UPF)

Moderator: Mercè Oliva (UPF)

What do you do when you find out you're the star of a porno film? That's what happened to Dutch journalist and presenter Welmoed Sijtsma. And she's not the only one. Actresses, singers, influencers and even unknown teenagers have been transformed into porn stars against their will. In this documentary series, Sijtsma investigates the dark and sinister side of deepfake technology in porn. She goes looking for the person who made her video and discovers that 96% of deepfake videos are pornographic and hers is just one of many. Sijtsma talks to women who've been through similar experiences and discovers the huge effect identity theft has had on them. Sijtsma tried to have the images deleted but, in the online world, they can never be completely erased and the legislation is outdated. This programme had such a big impact in the Netherlands that its parliament is now considering a new law to combat such cases.

PROJECT ALIENS

Japan, 35', social experiment documentary, NHK

Presented by: Jordi Sánchez-Navarro (UOC)

At a time of divisions caused by race, nationality, gender, wealth... how can people with different values and beliefs manage to agree about something? This is a social experiment documentary with four protagonists: an unemployed man who lives with his parents, a Korean woman who works to defend minorities, a nightclub owner who's against people 'who don't try it' and a transgender man who wants to marry his partner but whose parents disapprove. These four strangers were selected after searching through about 100 profiles of minorities that were underrepresented on Japanese TV. The four participants agreed to interact whilst hidden behind an avatar in the form of an alien, recording themselves at home and visiting a virtual reality environment developed specifically for this programme. This anonymity meant that the participants could communicate honestly. With their faces hidden, they'll travel together to the moon, learning from each other along the way. Will they be able to resolve their differences?

YOUR BODY BELONGS TO YOU

Netherlands, 17', edutainment for children, NTR

It's usually nice to be touched but not always. What is right and what is wrong? Non-consensual touching is a social problem in terms of both scale and impact. Up to now no children's TV programme had dealt with this issue. By telling children that their body belongs to them and that only they have the control, we want to make them more aware. We want to give children the tools to detect and to explain. This programme is broadcast 5 times a week for a target audience of 7 to 12- year-olds. Each episode deals with a different topic.

STOP IT NOW

Netherlands, 12', vlog series, Zapp.nl

In this series of vlogs, 5 teenagers share their personal experiences related to sexual abuse. Lara, Jesper, Samantha, Gio and Floor take their cameras and report daily on their lives and fears about explaining their situation to anyone. STOP IT NOW presents us with the inner struggle of this group of boys and girls and their personal journeys, when they decide to ask for help, are shocking, resulting in a very important message: it's not your fault if someone crosses your boundaries; ask for help. A series of videos that show at what point abuse begins and, more importantly, how it can be stopped. Based on true stories, this vlog series is a truthful and direct portrayal of the situation faced by many teenagers and it has been very successful on social media where such problems have been discussed, interacting with the posts and stories and giving the audience the chance to ask their own questions. TikTok has introduced a universal hand gesture for sexual abuse emergencies.

SCARS FOR LIFE

Belgium, 27', documentary, Ketnet (VRT)

This unique documentary shows us the real, physical scars of a group of children. And we're not talking about minor scars but physically visible scars that have been caused by cancer. In this special episode, Vinz and Elise tell their own stories about how they found out they had cancer, how they have coped with it, what they think of their scars and what it feels like to lose their hair. A series of hopeful stories that have allowed different children who've experienced what it's like to have cancer to talk about it without taboos. This special programme is an extra edition of the SCARS FOR LIFE series in which each episode focuses on two children who explain the stories behind their scars. On Ketnet, the children's channel of the public broadcaster VRT, one week a year is dedicated to cancer, when programmes are broadcast in which the disease is talked about openly in order to fund a campaign to help children with cancer.

LIVE, LOVE, LAUGH - HUNDRED YEARS OF WISDOM

Finland, 21', documentary, YLE

What's the secret to living a long life? In this programme, older people talk about sex, death and passion. In LIVE, LOVE, LAUGH - HUNDRED YEARS OF WISDOM a woman sees a group of Finns over 95 who've survived wars and much more. But this time they're not asked about war but about really important things. The series poses the question "what's an old person allowed to talk about?", with the aim of creating a space where older people can give advice on sex and talk about many other topics. Honest stories about the mental problems of their parents, the joy of lasting friendships and the difficulties in their love lives. A new perspective that shows us how many centenarians live a fuller and more joyful existence than many young people. A generation with almost a century of experience in life, love, passion, humour and relationships... why have we never asked them before?

THE DEVIL'S CONFESSION: THE LOST EICHMANN TAPES

Israel, 112', documentary, KAN11

Presented by: Xavier Brichs (Director of 30 minuts - 3Cat)

After fleeing Argentina, the architect of the 'Final Solution', Adolf Eichmann, is kidnapped by the Israeli Mossad and brought to Israel to stand trial for his horrific crimes against the Jewish people. Accused of murdering millions, Eichmann adopts the usual Nazi line of defence and denies everything. To dismantle his lies, Gideon Hausner, the Israeli attorney general, has to find the key piece of evidence that will prove Eichmann's guilt: a series of audio interviews. Part courtroom drama, part true crime, part espionage thriller, this documentary chronicles the investigation and search for these mysterious taped interviews of Eichmann and former SS officer Willem Sassen. Tapes that were kept out of Hausner's reach because many powerful people have never had any interest in their contents being made public. This multi-layered conspiracy and new revelations about why the tapes remained in the shadows are astonishing on their own; but when we hear Eichmann speak with joy and delight about "the best moment of my life" (administering the Holocaust), it's understandable why the New York Times has called this documentary "chilling".

SITUATION ROOM

Sweden, 48', infotainment, SVT
Videoconference discussion with Saam Kapadia (producer)
Presented by: Sergi Vicente, Director of betevé
This programme shows the audience how their country would act in very specific crises. Officials and guest experts are challenged to make quick decisions and handle threats and disasters, ranging from hurricanes to terrorist attacks and wars. The show talks about the importance of preparing for the worst while hoping for the best. The hosts are an unorthodox combination: Camilla Kvartoft is one of Sweden's best-known current affairs presenters and Felix Herngren is one of Sweden's most popular comedians and film directors. All the experts present on the set are people who would actually be responsible for taking the decisions if the crisis were real. The only two exceptions are two former ministers. In this episode, a Russian attack in Sweden is simulated, on the island of Gotland. This programme was recorded before the Russian war began.

SPECIAL SESSION: DISCUSSION ABOUT PUBLIC TELEVISION'S OTT PLATFORMS

Moderator: Elena Neira (UOC lecturer, expert in audiovisual distribution)

Participants: Jordi Ferrerons (3Cat - Televisió de Catalunya), Alberto Fernández (RTVE Play - Televisión Española), Miquel Herrada (laXarxa+ - Xarxa de Televisions Locals) and José Luis Blanco (Primeran - Euskal Telebista).

Gone are the days when public broadcasters only had to think about producing content to entertain, inform and educate for linear television. Now their viewers are demanding to be able to watch content whenever and however they want. The shift to having platforms that interact with viewers conveniently, readily and in a personalised way has brought about new challenges and possibilities. Will public broadcasters programme different content? Will they be more aware of the different target audiences? Will more resources be allocated to technology than to content?
