Marxism Today. Collapsing States

Audiovisuals

How to film collapse, economic crisis or the oppressions of a political system and an ideology? “Inner Memory” is the product of María Ruido’s trip to Germany, in December 2000, to research the history of her family and of Spanish emigration to Europe in the 1960s and 1970s. In contrast to official memory, this is a celebration of personal and collective experience. Marxism Today, produced for the 2010 Berlin Biennale, is made up of archive images and interviews with three former teachers of Marxism-Leninism in the GDR, who evoke their experience after the fall of the Wall: stories of professionals, mothers and lovers that intertwine with disillusionment and the remains of the failed political system in which they were educated. In her new film, Hito Steyerl reflects on the global economic crisis in an aeroplane junkyard in the Californian desert: some are there due to the crisis, others are recycled in a process exemplified by the Boeing that belonged to film director Howard Hughes and then to the Israeli air force and was finally blown up in the Hollywood movie Speed. In Free Fall suggests surprising connections between economy, violence and spectacle. [Video session presented by María Ruido]
