A Taste of Animac 2025: We Animals

The presentation will offer a sneak peek at the highlights of the Animac 2025 program, the International Animation Film Festival of Catalonia, which will take place in Lleida from February 20 to 23. Under the theme "We animals!", this edition will explore the prominence of animals in animation and their contemporary representation. Animac is the country’s leading animation event, attracting 30,000 annual visitors to its screenings, lectures, workshops, and other activities, and featuring prominent international guests.

Barry JC Purves: “A Happiness of Puppets”

The celebrated British animator, honored with the Animation Master Award at Animac 2024, will share exclusive images and stories from his stop-motion work, focusing on magnificent characters embodied in sophisticated puppets. Purves will present images of the many puppets he has worked with throughout his extensive career in stop-motion animation, dating back to his early days at Cosgrove Hall in 1978, many of which have not been seen in decades. He will showcase puppets that, through his animations, have conveyed complex emotions and feelings in TV series, commercials, and short films. He will also illustrate the creative process through original concept sketches, sculptures, and armatures, and will discuss his collaboration with model makers, often Mackinnon and Saunders (also puppet creators for Tim Burton and Guillermo del Toro), as well as the constant evolution of techniques.

Throughout the event, he will reflect on what a puppet is and how to achieve its best performance, and one of his short films, Tchaikovsky – An Elegy, will be screened. Barry JC Purves is an internationally acclaimed filmmaker and animator, nominated for the Academy Awards. He is also a theater actor and stage director and has published the book Stop Motion: Process, Passion and Performance.

19.00 | Masterclass ‘A happiness of puppets’ - Barry JC Purves

The master Barry JC Purves will show the puppets he has worked with over his stop motion career. He will also screen one of his short films, ‘Tchaikovsky – an elegy’.
