(The Hague, Holland, 1949) is Robert S. Lynd Professor of Sociology, Columbia University, New York, where she is a member of the Committee on Global Thought. She also teaches at the London School of Economics. A member of the Council of Foreign Relations and of the National Academy of Sciences Panel on Cities, she has been engaged in research on globalisation (in its social, economic and political dimensions), immigration, the global city, new technologies and changes in the liberal state as a result of present transnational conditions. A recipient of the Prince of Asturias Award for Social Sciences in 2013, she has published a great number of books, among the most recent of which are Women's Burden: Counter-Geographies of Globalization and the Feminization of Survival (published in Spanish as Contrageografías de la globalización: género y ciudadanía en los circuitos transfronterizos – Traficantes de sueños, 2003), A Sociology of Globalization (published in Spanish as Una sociología de la globalización – Katz, 2007), Territory, Authority, Rights: From Medieval to Global Assemblages (published in Spanish as Territorio, autoridad y derechos: de los ensamblajes medievales a los ensamblajes globales – Katz, 2010), Nuevas geopolíticas.
