A graduate of Queen's College (Cambridge), where he was awarded a double first in English Literature. Since then he has written in a variety of formats: stage, print, radio, television, political speechwriting and interactive media.

Throughout the 1990s he was a regular feature writer on computing and new media for The New Statesman. His book on urban life and modernity, A Shout in the Street (1990) was published in both the United States and the United Kingdom.

As a dramatist and theatre director he won several awards including an Edinburgh Fringe First (1984), and in 1991 he wrote the script for the musical Matador, which won an Olivier Award from the Society of West End Theatre. He has written numerous scripts for television, including the hit BBC1 series In Deep (2001-2003) and the Emmy award winning series Waking the Dead (2002-2006).
