Writer

Of Amazigh origins, is a Catalan writer who studied Arabic Philology at the University of Barcelona and worked as a cultural mediator in Granollers. She made her debut as a writer with Jo també sóc catalana (I Am Also Catalan, 2004), an autobiographical work about identity and her sense of belonging in her new country. In 2008 she was awarded the Ramon Llull Prize for her novel L'últim patriarca (Planeta; in English, The Last Patriarch), another work with a considerable autobiographical content portraying conflicts between cultures and civilisations. This work received the Prix Ulysse (for a first novel) and was a finalist for the Prix Méditerranée Étranger. Her most recent book, La caçadora de cossos (Planeta 2011; in English The Body Hunter,) recounts the narrator’s sexual encounters with fifteen different men. Najat El Hachmi has worked in different branches of the media and also presented a weekly report in Amazigh for the former radio station Catalunya Cultura. She presently writes as a columnist for the newspaper El Periódico de Catalunya.
