Maria V. Sánchez-Vives, has a PhD in neurosciences and, since 2008, has been an ICREA research professor at IDIBAPS (August Pi i Sunyer Biomedical Research Institute) where she heads the Neuroscience Systems group. She is also an associate professor in the Department of Physiology at the University of Barcelona and editor-in-chief of the journal Frontiers in Systems Neuroscience. She was a postdoctoral student at Rockefeller University (New York) and a research fellow at Yale University. She is presently researching into different aspects of spontaneous rhythmic neuronal activity, its regulating mechanisms, the information contained and the consequences of such activity, studying these facets from both experimental and computational standpoints. She also works on the mental representation of the body by way of brain-computer interfaces, using virtual reality systems in order to understand these processes.
