Josep Maria Martí Font has degrees in Law and Economics at the University of Barcelona (1967-73) and, after some early experience working in the alternative press and Ràdio 4 from 1974 to 1979, he went in the latter year to live in the United States where he spent six years in New York, San Francisco and Los Angeles, working as a script writer in Hollywood besides being a correspondent for the magazine Lecturas and a columnist for the daily La Vanguardia, the magazines Cambio 16, Fotogramas and other publications of the time. In 1984 he joined the editorial staff of the daily El País in Madrid, where he began as head of the Society section and then became head of the International section. He spent long periods in Moscow in 1987 and 1988 during the Perestroika at which time he studied Russian. From 1989 to 1994 he was the El País correspondent in Germany and covered the fall of the Berlin Wall. In 1994, now in Madrid, he became editor-in-chief of the Culture pages and, in 1997, returned to Barcelona to work in the El País office, after which he moved to Paris as head of the newspaper’s Paris office. He is presently head of the Opinion and Culture sections of the Catalan edition of El País. His most recent publications are Désirs de France (Longing for France, Michalon, Paris, 2007 – a collective work) and Star, La Contracultura de los 70 (Star, the 1970s Counter-culture, Glènat, Barcelona, 2008 – a collective work).
