Jerzy Jarz?bski

Jerzy Jarz?bski (Bytom, Poland, 1947) has lived in Cracow since 1949. He read Polish Studies at the Jagiellonian University of Cracow, where he now lectures. He is a member of the board of the Polish PEN Club. His interests focus on 20th and 21st century literature, mainly the works of Witold Gombrowicz, Bruno Schulz and Stanis?aw Lem. The thing that enthrals him most about literature is the extraordinary and complex personalities writers have. He has written 700 articles and essays, including 13 books, one of which –a monograph entitled Schulz– was translated into Spanish (Maldoror, 2003), and also at least a hundred other articles translated into a number of European languages and Turkish and Japanese. He drew up the Polish edition of the Complete Works of Lem –a 34-volume collection. He has lectured as visiting professor at Harvard University (1997) and at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem (2000-2001).
