Faisal Devji

Historian, lecturer at the University of Oxford.

(Zanzibar, Tanzania, 1964). A historian specialising in Islamic Studies and Reader in Modern South Asian History at Oxford University, he studied at the University of British Columbia, the University of California at Berkeley and at the University of Chicago, where he obtained a PhD with a thesis on Muslim nationalism in India. He has been Head of Graduate Studies at The Institute of Ismaili Studies in London and has taught at Yale University and at The New School for Social Research in New York. Notable among his publications are Landscapes of the Jihad: Militancy, Morality, Modernity, Cornell University Press, 2005 (published in Spanish as Paisajes del yijah. Militancia, moralidad, modernidad, Edicions Bellaterra, 2007) and The Terrorist in Search of Humanity: Militant Islam and Global Politics (Hurst and Co. and Columbia University Press, 2008). He is also on the editorial committee of the review Public Culture.
