Eric Hobsbawm (1917-2012) was one of the most influential historians of the second half of the 20th century. Emeritus professor of Social and Economic History at Birkbeck College (University of London), his books include The Age of Extremes: The Short Twentieth Century, 1914-1991 (1994); The Age of Capital, 1848-1875 (1996); The Age of Revolution, 1789-1848 (1988) and The Age of Empire, 1875-1914 (2000) and have become required reading at universities around the world. His last publications were Essays on Globalization, Democracy and Terrorism (2007) and How to change the world. Tales on Marx and Marxism (2011).
