(Vecchiano, Italy, 1943-2012). One of Italy’s best-known present-day authors, he is a journalist and teaches Portuguese Language and Literature at the University of Sienna. His studies and translations of the work of Fernando Pessoa are internationally-renowned reference works. He has a thoroughgoing knowledge of Portuguese culture, which he often portrays in his novels, for example his famous work Pereira Declares: A Testimony (published in Spanish as Sostiene Pereira – Anagrama, 1997). He writes on a regular basis for the newspapers Il Corriere della sera and El País, as a mass media critic, with articles censuring the concentration of media power in Italy. His work has been widely translated and he has been awarded a number of literary prizes, for example the Médicis étranger award, the Francisco Cerecedo Prize for Journalism, the Italian PEN Club Prize and the Jean Monnet Prize for European Literature. He has recently published El tiempo envejece deprisa (Anagrama 2010) / El temps envelleix de pressa (Ed. 62, 2010).
