He is a poet, novelist and essayist.
He is a graduate of the Jagellonian University in Cracow. In 1982 he established his residence in Paris, although just four years ago he returned to Poland.
He is one of the most outstanding Polish poets. His work has been translated into different languages and has earned, among other distinctions, a Guggenheim grant and the French Prix de la Liberté award. He is the author of collections of poems such as Ziemia ognista (1994) and Pragnienie (2000), as well as of the essays Another Beauty (1998) and A Defense of Ardor (2002).
Since 1982 and up to the present day, he has taught creative writing classes at the University of Houston.
