International terrorism and violence in Istanbul

Eight years after the 9-11 attacks in New York, international terrorism and security continue to dominate the international scene. The persistence of the Iraq conflict and the proliferation of threats and conflicts of all kinds define a world in which the military supremacy of the United States coexists with the failure of multilateral organisations to impose peaceful global governability. These discussions avoid discourses based on the inevitability of a clash of civilisations, in favour of a deliberate reflection on violence that can help us to understand and face the complexity of an increasingly complex world.

The University of Bilgi in Istanbul joins the ongoing collaboration between the CCCB and the New School University in New York to reflect on all these issues that are of prime importance in the post 9-11 world. This conference, which will be held in Spring 2009 at the Santral Cultural Centre, Bilgi University, is the continuation of the debates The impact of 9-11 and Madrid 11-M (The New School University, New York, April 2005), and Global Lies, Local Violence (CCCB, Barcelona, November 2006).
