The Shaping of an Identity: A History of Catalonia

A conversation with Josep Fontana on the publication of his latest book

Why are we Catalans today a people with a strong sense of identity? What is the wellspring of this feeling of belonging to a collective that shares a language, culture and certain ways of understanding society and the world? The historian Josep Fontana has sought to trace the process which, from the eighth century to the present day, has shaped the Catalan identity and, in clear, straightforward terms, he offers readers the keys to this evolution in his book La formació d’una identitat. Una història de Catalunya (The Shaping of an Identity: A History of Catalonia, Eumo, 2014), which he will discuss with other eminent historians.
