Pat O'Neill (1939) studied design and sculpture at UCLA. He was a pioneer of the introduction of computer-generated graphics into film, a technique which he used in his very first film, By the Sea (1963). He was also a co-founder of the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) School of Film/Video in the early 70s. He is the author of an extensive, innovative film oeuvre.
In The Decay of Fiction, his latest film, the camera explores the abandoned Ambassador Hotel, inhabited by phantom actors shown in a hypnotic form.
