Nikolai Izvolov. The art of reconstruction

Nikolai Izvolov (Kostroma, Russia, 1962) historian and cinema researcher. In the 1990s he developed an innovative method for reconstructing films and applied it to the works of Dziga Vertov, Aleksandr Medvedkin, Lev Kuleshov, etc. Combining meticulous scientific research with a creative assembly, Izvolov led a large number of reconstructions of the first Russian masterpieces considered lost forever. Author of the book Phenomenon of Film. History and Theory, he had also co-operated on several film and documentary projects, including the biography of Aleksandr Medvedkin by Chris Marker (The Last Bolshevik). He is head of the department of the History of Russian Cinema at the Moscow Cinema Art Institute, where he is now developing a film digital commentary method called "HYPERKINO".
