I+C+i #3 “The Value of Free Knowledge”

10-14h // WORKSHOP: “All about Wikipedia", with Amical Viquipèdia.

With the birth of Wikipedia, just over ten years ago, knowledge started to be produced by users themselves. This was a revolution in every way, because it implied understanding knowledge as something generated by all and not just by a select few, who up to that point had had the power to generate or distribute it (experts, academics, etc.). Doubts regarding the reliability that a virtual encyclopaedia like Wikipedia could offer gradually evolved into it being considered an indispensable source of information, a consideration that still holds true today. However, what lies behind Wikipedia? Who contributes the contents? How is its reliability ensured? How does it function internally? In this practical workshop, we will try to answer these questions.

16.30h // DOCUMENTARY “Truth in Numbers? Everything According to Wikipedia” Scott Glosserman and Nic Hill, 85’, English (with subtitles).

18-20h // DEBATE "The value of free knowledge":  with  Luis Ángel Fernández Hermana, Marc Garriga and Vincent Puig. Moderator: Karma Peiró.

Traditionally, libraries and archives have been the guardians of knowledge in a physical medium, validated by authorised thought leaders. Internet and the new digital tools are causing an accelerated transformation in this system of transmission and conservation of knowledge. The rebirth of concepts such as commons, free knowledge, collective intelligence, etc. together with the success of an open encyclopaedia like Wikipedia raise decisive questions regarding the way in which we will manage knowledge and the memory in the coming decades. The new scenario furthermore poses challenges for which no univocal answer exists. How should all the knowledge generated in digital format be preserved? What should be done regarding obsolescence of formats and reproduction devices?
