Consuming Spirits

Xcèntric, the CCCB's cinema

First feature by US underground filmmaker Chris Sullivan. Almost exclusively using manual techniques, a 16 mm camera and 15 years of work (with the help of friends and family), it dramatizes a personal story. However, Consuming Spirits is more than an obsessively disciplined artisan piece; the outsider, sometimes naïf aesthetic contrasts with a dark, painful adult fantasy. This is a singular work, full of family secrets, sexual nostalgia, sometimes grotesque and tragicomic. The drawings, cut-outs and miniature sets form a world reminiscent of graphic novels like David Small’s Stitches or Alison Bechdel’s Fun Home. The mix of savage hyperrealist narrative and visual invention make Consuming Spirits a vital yet unclassifiable work on the animated film scene.
