The Books of Café Europa

This lecture starts out from the conviction that one of the decisive moments for European literary modernity was the day when somebody sat down at a table in some public establishment, asked for a coffee and then took out a newspaper or a book and started reading or, still more, pulled out a notebook and began to write. One must pay careful attention to these individuals who, almost without realising it, became the Café people, because among them are some of the names that have transformed - from these selfsame tables - the very idea of the writer and also the way of thinking cities, and thinking about them.
