Joandomènec Ros

Joandomènec Ros i Aragonès (Barcelona, 1946) has a PhD in Biology. He is Professor of Ecology at the University of Barcelona and also President of the Institut d’Estudis Catalans (IEC – Institute for Catalan Studies). He has taught in doctoral, masters and postgraduate degree courses in a dozen universities around the world, and his main field of research is the biology and ecology of marine benthonic organisms (in particular opisthobranch molluscs) and the communities they form. He also works on aspects of ecology in general, pollution, conservation of biodiversity and other fields of applied ecology. He has published more than a hundred scientific articles and, as author, co-author and editor, a dozen technical studies. He has also translated key books and articles in the fields of ecology, biology and history of science. In 2006 he was awarded the Narcís Monturiol Medal of the Generalitat (Government) of Catalonia for Scientific and Technological Merit, in recognition of the numerous research projects he has both participated in and directed. In addition to the IEC, he belongs to forma porta de several scientific societies and academies, including the Societat Catalana de Biologia (Catalan Society of Biology), the Institució Catalana d’Història Natural (Catalan Institute of Natural History) and he is also a member of a considerable number of advisory committees for governments and international organisms.
