Introduction to experimental animation

By Lourdes Villagómez

As part of the congress CINEMA AGAINST THE TIDE: Latin America and Spain, the CCCB is organizing an introductory workshop to one of the cinematographic disciplines with most creative potential: animation. Mexican filmmaker Lourdes Villagómez takes a playful look at various handmade animation techniques, with particular attention to those that involve the participants as animated objects.

The workshop is directed at artists in all disciplines (performance, visual arts, dance, writing, audiovisual creation, chefs, graphic, fashion and textile design...), students and people interested in incorporating moving images into their creative processes.

Programme

The workshop consists in learning the basic principles of animation using a series of exercises designed to incorporate personal and everyday elements into individual projects.

The structure of audiovisual creation, still by still, can be applied to such vastly different fields as poetry, fashion design and even culinary creation. At the end of the workshop, participants will have discovered various animation tools and techniques to incorporate into their work.

The work is organized into three sessions:

Day 1. Introduction to basic animation mechanisms and tools. Viewing of material related to the themes of the workshop, an exercise in direct animation.

Day 2. How to set up a home studio. Viewing of material. Group pixelation exercise. Discussion of the possibilities of incorporating animation into the participants’ work.

Day 3. Editing photographic material. Presentation of the exercises worked on during the workshop.

AIMED AT
Artists in all disciplines (performance, visual arts, dance, writing, audiovisual creation, chefs, graphic, fashion and textile design...), students and people interested in incorporating moving images into their creative processes. It is a good idea for students to have a basic knowledge of photography and/or digital video.

REQUISITES
Participants must bring their own laptop (PC or Mac) and a digital camera, webcam or video camera with USB or FireWire connection. They do not need to have video or animation editing software, as participants will be given a temporary licence for the programme, for use during the workshop.
