Who’s Afraid of Literature?

Contemporary crises stir consciences and cause writers to initiate actions that go beyond the strict limits of art. Can a literary work offer solutions to great problems, or was that never their function? Will literature always be free of responsibilities? Do writers have an ethical responsibility? The initial starting-point can be no other than to ask ourselves what value society places on literature today, and whether it still conserves its capacity to influence things.

Nostalgie TV interviews Banks at the Brussels Book Fair 2008.
