Synopsis: The concept of vomitorium serves to highlight the relations between physical or virtual systems that are designed to repel certain groups or attitudes. This episode studies street furniture to explore the way design is used as a mechanism to regulate public space: benches that repel the homeless, anti-skate surfaces, and containers that “vomit” anyone who tries to take things out of them. The program also draws a line from this urban planning logic to the way the algorithmic infrastructures of the network society operate. Social networks that censor naked bodies, filters that block political contents, and other examples of technological mediation that impose non-negotiable conditions of segregation.
