Kosmopolis 2008

IV International Literature Fest

From 22 October 2008 to 26 October 2008

In its fourth biennial edition, Kosmopolis (K08) establishes itself as the main expanded literature event. Five days in which to continue exploring new themes, genres and formats that reflect the festival's innovative spirit through its core structural sections: the spoken word, the printed word and the electronic word.

K08 will centre on the most pressing humanitarian crises and global conflicts. It will focus on writers' commitment to new social and ecological causes, featuring authors such as Gao Xingjian, Tzvetan Todorov, Jon Lee Anderson, J. M. Coetzee, Hari Kunzru, Dave Eggers, Donna Leon, David Rieff, Russell Banks and Elias Khoury.

K08 will also look at the changes being wrought in journalism by the new media, with Dan Gillmor, Francis Pisani, Robert S. Boynton and Amira Hass. The sessions of Cafè Europa set out to discover the poetry of the present by exploring the connected vessels of modern tradition and oral word, with John Giorno, Pierre Joris, Lydia Lunch, Jorge Riechmann, Eduard Escoffet, Gonzalo Escarpa, Enric Casasses and Perejaume. The Ballard exhibition delves into the world of this British writer, with Toby Litt, Bruce Sterling and V. Vale; and, to mark the centenary of the birth of Agustí Bartra, there is a tribute with Roger Bartra, Sam Abrams and José María Espinasa. Finally, Kosmopolis will repeat the poetry reading given by Lou Reed in New York as part of the programme Made in CataluNYa, featuring the work of Brossa, Espriu, Vinyoli and many more.

This fourth biennial also sees the debut of the Kosmopolis Archive; once again we'll be broadcasting Alpha Channel and hosting the experimental space Kosmotics, devoted to relations between literature and hypermedia, with authors such as Robert Coover; and we continue our comic, literary and musical performances, plus the usual slam and spoken word sessions, with John Giorno and the Nuyorican Poets Café Team.
